How many times in the last year have you heard the phrase “… since the Great Depression ”? Some of it is media fodder to elaborate their sensationalist mantra. But dig deep into what is going on and the truth is, we have some issues to deal with.
At the time of this writing, I did a quoted Google search on the phrase “ since the Great Depression ” and found almost 2.7 million hits. Now, for those unfamiliar with a quoted Google search, any time you put a phrase in quotes, Google will only search for that entire phrase (within some margin of error). I am a bit afraid to do an unquoted search. For those braver than me, give it a shot!
My Grand parents lived and struggled through the Great Depression. My parents were born during that period but were too young to remember much. However, a period like that tends to linger on long afterwards. I only know my paternal Grandmother and she was always quite frugal. My parents carried on that frugality during my earlier years, but later loosened their purse strings as the economic conditions of the 1980′s and 1990′s offered many a prosperous livelyhood.
So why is the saying “… since the Great Depression ”, or conversely, “…not since the Great Depression ”, being bandied about so much? Is it just a collection of doom and gloom and we should all just ignore it? Most probably there are people who think this. But more primarily, would it be that we honestly are being affected by another depression and noone wants to tell you it? By applying this powerful expression, it gives our feds the abilities to motivate the herd that there is a problem but possibly it protect s them from literally having to use the dreaded “D” word. That concept is harmful to elections. It does get people in politics elected out of workplace.
Why don’t we simply just use the text and get it over with. Depression! We are in a Depression! There I said it! Now, perchance we can take the actions to transfer on with our lives and cope with it. By endeavoring to do everything in its power to keep away from the “D” word, our government could be prolonging its effects by attempt ing to inflate assets that don’t deserve to be inflated. Corporations that were reckless and are bankrupt should be permitted to fail. Let the Constitutional supply of personal bankruptcy action in and take care of the circumstance . There are, anyway, no conventions for bailouts and stimulus program s in the Constitution.
So what is the difference between a economic downturn and a natural depression? There is an old economist joke that says, when your neighbor is out of work, it’s a recession; when you are out of work, it’s a depression. Economists will vary with their definitions , but simply a depression is a prolonged recession. In either case, economic contractions are a natural part of the business cycle. It is a cleansing of the system. Any interruption by the government disrupts that cleansing and the results are simply unpredictable.

As of when this article was written, I performed a Google phrase match search (in quotes) for the phrase “ since the Great Depression ”. What resulted is a search of almost three million hits. If you are not familiar with Google’s phrase match search, it essentially allows you to get a more refined search. If you could imagine that there is almost three million with a refined search, how many would result with a raw or broad based search?

So what is the difference between a tough economy and a depression? Have you ever heard the economics joke that defines the difference between a recession and a depression? It answers the question, “what’s the difference between a recession and a depression?” and the answer is, “in a recession, your neighbors or family is out of work. In a depression, you are out of work”. A depression is a lasting recession. But everyone thinks of depressions as being bad. Yet, they have a way of cleaning or clearing the economic engine. But when the government tries to intervene it will serve only to prolong this clearing process.

I am on a project building a cube sat and I am concerned with mitigating the risk of battery failure during operation. For those engineers scientists out there, what are the biggest risks I need to worry about for the battery? For example, is it the extreme environmental conditions , cell design failure , degradation, or something else?
We are using a Li-ion prismatic cell. Our battery specs are as following: voltage 3 to 4.2 V, and capacity 1.8 Ah at C/5 rate at 23° C.
